This Privacy Policy explains what information this website collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. Plain version first: we do not sell your personal information, and we do not harvest your data to trade or profile you. We use a small set of well known tools to understand how the site is used so we can make it better and more reliable.
Our approach
- We do not sell or rent your personal information.
- We do not require you to create an account or hand over personal details to use the warning lookup.
- We use analytics to see what is working and what to fix, not to identify you personally.
The severe weather lookup
When you check your area, you enter a US ZIP code. We use that ZIP only to look up the approximate map coordinates for that area, and we send those approximate coordinates to the National Weather Service to ask whether an alert is active. We do not store your ZIP code searches, and we do not link them to you.
To keep the tool available and to prevent abuse, we briefly count requests by network address. That count is short lived and is not used to identify you. Weather data is provided by the National Weather Service (NOAA), a US government source.
The alerts interest poll
On our alerts page you can vote on which kinds of alerts you would want in the future. We store only the running totals of those votes. The poll does not collect your name, phone number, or email, and there is no sign-up yet. A small cookie may be set so the site can remember that you already voted.
Analytics and site improvement
We use two analytics tools to understand how visitors use the site so we can improve it:
- Google Analytics. This measures things like which pages are visited, general location at a city level, the type of device and browser, and how people move through the site. It uses cookies and similar identifiers. Google Analytics does not store your full IP address. For details, see the Google Privacy Policy.
- Microsoft Clarity. This captures how visitors interact with pages, including clicks, scrolling, and anonymized session replays and heatmaps, tied to a pseudonymous identifier rather than your name. It uses first and third party cookies. Sensitive input fields are masked by default. For details, see the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
We use this information in aggregate to fix problems and improve the experience. We do not use it to sell your data.
Advertising
This site may display advertising provided by Google. Google and its partners may use cookies to serve and measure ads. You can review and adjust how Google personalizes ads for you in your Google Ad Settings.
Cookies
Cookies are small files stored by your browser. This site uses cookies for analytics, for advertising as described above, for remembering that you voted in the poll, and for normal site operation and security. You can control or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking some cookies may affect how parts of the site work.
Hosting, delivery, and security
The site is delivered through Cloudflare, a content delivery and security network that helps the site load quickly and stay protected. To do this, Cloudflare processes network information such as IP addresses to route traffic and block abuse. Some forms on the site may use spam protection that checks whether a request is automated.
If the site sends email, for example a message you request or an administrative notice, we use a standard mail delivery service to send it. We do not add you to marketing lists without your action.
Comments
If commenting is enabled and you leave a comment, we collect the information in the comment form along with your IP address and browser information to help detect spam. This helps keep discussions usable.
Your choices
- Adjust or clear cookies in your browser settings.
- Install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
- Manage ad personalization in your Google Ad Settings.
- Most browsers let you send a Do Not Track signal, which we respect where practical.
Data retention
We keep analytics data only as long as it is useful for understanding and improving the site, in line with the providers above. We do not maintain personal profiles of visitors.
Children
This site provides general weather safety information and is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site grows. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page.
